Pride and Prejudice Unit Plan

Hey guys!

So, in my unit plan for Pride and Prejudice, I chose to let my students watch the YouTube series, The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, over the 2005 film adaptation (starring Keira Knightley as Lizzie) and the 1995 BBC TV adaptation (starring Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy).

Why did I choose to let them watch this version of the novel over the others?

Well, as I explained during the final exam, the aim I had for my unit plan was for the students to work on characterization and learning on how to relate to the characters (whom, on the surface, appear hard to relate to).  The LBD is a great and fun modern day telling of the story, that's more like how Clueless is to Emma.

I felt that they'd have more fun watching a modern retelling and be able to relate/understand it more.  The series essentially tells the story of Grad student Lizzie Bennet and the events that happen over the course of a year, of which she films and posts online as her graduate thesis project.  All the characters are updated, like Charles Bingley is updated to Bing Lee (a Doctor), and it has a diverse cast that represents all ethnicities, genders, and sexualities. It's a bit longer to watch than the other adaptations, but I think students will enjoy this way more.

If you get the chance, I'd recommend you watch it! There's only 100 5-minute videos, but I promise it'll make you laugh and cry.  I've attached the first episode so you can see for yourself.
