Field Cite Observation #2

Ms. X was teaching a lesson on literary elements to get the class ready to read the play A Christmas Carol. In doing so Ms. X gave the students handouts of various literary elements and their definitions. From there, students were then told to get out their textbooks that they often use of various short stories. The students were told that they would be reading the short story Alice in Wonderland.
Ms.X read the story out loud while the class followed along. She often times paused to ask the students questions that ensured their understanding of the text. Additionally, students were also given the opportunity to ask questions of their own if they had any. Once Ms. X felt comfortable enough, she allowed for students to volunteer to read aloud various poems within the short story. From there she also showed a You Tube clip of the Disney cartoon adaptation and asked for the students to follow along in their text books where the poem was exactly what the movie was depicting. This gave not only the ELL students a great visual aid and further understanding of the text, but also allowed for students to easily identify what literary elements were being used. Furthermore, the students were also given the opportunity to see technology being utilized in an educational setting, rather than just for recreational purposes.
