I really appreciated Mrs.
Smathers-West’s approach to classroom management. She is very organized; homework and in-class
assignments are visible on the board for reference and students have a daily
agenda. This structure provides security
and expectation, allowing for the most efficient usage of class time. I also saw bell ringers on the board but
didn’t witness any. Mrs. Smathers-West
allowed me to look over her lesson planning binder and I was really impressed
with the Pacing Guide (which she developed for the district). Basically the guide is an overview of weekly
planning so that teachers can stay on target with units and daily lessons. I asked her how she
transitioned to the Common Core Standards and she informed me that her entire
English IV curriculum was derived from CORE standards.
